Hi!  On Tuesday my mom came in and talked about a program we do called Meals on Wheels. Then she told us this joke,”What did the cat say when a mouse passed by on roller-skates?” ” ‘Meals on Wheels!’ ”.  Then she talked a little about what we do.  We go to a place where we get the food in insulated bags.  The red bags are hot meals and the blue bags, you guessed it, are the cold meals.  Then we go around to homes of seniors who can’t cook food for themselves and deliver them 1 hot and 1 cold meal.  Sometimes people need a * meal.  I don’t know what the * stands for but it is very, very interesting.

So Mrs. Ommen and my mom had talked about making the people on our route valentines cards.  Michael W. had this great idea of a pop-up-heart card.  Dakari made one black heart with a red heart on the inside of the black one, and Oscar made the opposite.  Dierdre made a card where there was one heart at the bottom and they got smaller as they sprung off on “paper springs”.  Tia made a really sweet card that said:

“Dear friend,

I am Tia, Ben’s friend, and I made this card.  It’s just for you.

GO MEALS ON WHEELS!!!!

Love,Tia.”

I’ve learned that through Meals on Wheels, you sort of make a family through doing it.  At the start, they seem like strangers but after a while you get to know them better.  Giving is better than receiving.

Sincerely,

Ben

Dear Ms. Ommen:

On behalf of the Meals on Wheels of Durham staff I would like to thank you and your second grade class for the special valentine’s day treats for our Meals on Wheels clients. Your gifts brought such wonderful smiles and happiness to our clients and we are forever grateful for your acts of generosity and kindness. Most of our clients never receive anything at all, this has truly been special to them. Ben’s mom is a very dedicated and giving volunteer to Meals on Wheels and we appreciate both you and Mrs. F for such wonderful treats. If there is anything in the future that we can do to show our gratitude please let us know. Meals on Wheels is always willing to come out and speak or lend a helping hand in the community. We would love to continue a partnership with you and your school. Once again we say thanks to the 2nd grade class on behalf of our clients, may you forever be blessed !

Respectfully,
E.H.
